This new edition features an introduction by twentieth-century women's historian Elizabeth Crawford. In The Snow-Woman, first published in 1969 and out of print for decades, Stella Gibbons has created one of her most complex and poignant, yet still very funny, tales-of aging, coming to terms, and rediscovering life. And Maude finds the snow of years of bitterness beginning to melt away. ![]() ![]() ![]() Upon her return to London, she finds her frozen life invaded by a young mother and her son (born on great aunt Dorothea's sofa, no less) who have been more or less adopted by her long-time maid Millie. But when an unexpected visitor convinces Maude to visit old friends in France (and an old nemesis, who persistently calls her "the snow-woman"), she is brought face to face with the long-suppressed emotions, sorrows, and misunderstandings of the past. It's the 1960s, and Maude Barrington, now in her seventies, has kept life firmly at bay since the deaths of her three brothers in World War I. ![]() ![]() LePera offers readers the support and tools that will allow them to break free from destructive behaviors to reclaim and recreate their lives. One evening, he was so engrossed in sketching people on the subway, he simply forgot it was sitting on the seat beside him. This shift was helped along, in no small part, by a rather heartbreaking incident: he lost his trumpet. Gradually, he eased into making a living sketching impressions of Broadway shows for The New York Times and The Herald Tribune. ![]() He managed to support himself throughout his schooling by playing his trumpet evenings, in nightclubs and at weddings. After graduating from high school, he ventured to New York City to study art under the tutelage of Joan Sloan and Harry Wickey at the Art Students' League. They help the peddler tremendously and he realizes that they are not pesky monkeys but instead they are mindful monkeys. The monkey’s in this new novel remind me of the elves in the Shoemaker and the Elves. I think I love this new novel better than the original.
